We invite you to learn about a lean technique by playing this SMED game - a Quick Changeover simulation.

The simulation comes as a 58-slide presentation complete with detailed instructions as notes accompanying every slide.

The purpose of the simulation is to prove the benefits of implementing SMED (Quick Changeover) in your organization.

By playing two rounds (changing over from one set of dies/fixtures to another ) using building blocks, before and after implementing SMED, we will demonstrate how we can dramatically decrease the setup time (90% improvement).

The game is for a maximum of 6 teams of 2 players each. If more people are involved, you need to purchase additional Lego/Mega Bloks pieces.

Briefly, the agenda is as follows:

  • SMED/Quick Changeover Basics
  • Introduction of the SMED game
  • Play Round 1 – Traditional Changeover
  • Apply the SMED techniques
  • Play Round 2 – SMED/Quick Changeover
  • Discussions based on Results

The assembly instructions for each team can be printed from the presentation and they are ready to be used.

SMED Game Details:

First we’ll touch on some SMED/Quick Changeover basics such as definition, types, methodology and implementation steps.

We’ll explain how the game is going to be played, with its rules.

Then we’ll break in teams of two. Each team must do some preparatory work and assemble the machine and mount on it the first fixture.

Each team will play the first round.

One person will perform the changeover (replacing fixture 1 with fixture 2 and adding internal guides) and the other will record the changeover individual steps/activities and the timing for each step.

Next, we’ll apply the SMED techniques for implementation. Each team will make the required modifications on each machine and build the two fixture assemblies, placing fixture assembly one in the machine.

Then we’ll play the second round. One person performs the quick changeover and the second person will record the steps and the timing.

We’ll conclude with discussions based on the results achieved during each round, talking about the positive effects of implementing SMED.
